Awards presented in Brannockstown

Some of the recipients of award certificates in Brannockstown today with members of the Brannockstown Community Group and Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.
Certificates were awarded at an event in Brannoxtown Community National School today, to local people who have contributed to the life of the locality, writes Brian Byrne.

The event also marked the return of the community to the Supervalu National Tidy Towns 2019 competition, after not taking part for five years.

Prior to the presentations, members of Kilcullen Gospel Choir performed a number of songs from their repertoire, to a very appreciative audience.

Opening the presentations section, Steve Schwer thanked the Choir for coming along, and also all those who had helped with the organisation of the event. He noted that this year, Brannockstown had achieved five more marks than the village had the last time it participated in the Tidy Towns. He said a number of new residents had become involved this year, and that this was a significant reason for the improved performance.

"Change is sometimes a good thing, and it has been very good for us," he said, and he particularly thanked the Principal of Brannoxtown CNS, Sarah Fitzpatrick, for hosting the event in the school and for the involvement of the school in everything that was going on in Brannockstown. He also made special reference to the Baptist church for facilitating the school with car parking during drop off and pick-up times at the school, and for the help given in many other ways to the community.

The chair of the Brannockstown Community Group, Carol Scully, added her appreciation before handing out the certificates. "I want to thank everybody who helped me, who helped the group — a lot of whom aren't here today because of work and personal commitments. We are delighted at the results we got, and it is all due to the hard work by everyone."

The recipients were Pastor Richard Blayney and Stephanie Blayney, Mac Sully, Dermot Fitzgerald, Noel Clare, John Garrett, Tom Mockler, Kevin Brady, John Brady, Norman Egar, Dr Sarah Fitzpatrick and the pupils of Brannoxtown CNS, the Baptist Community, and Tommy Dillon. Attendance at the event included Deputy Martin Heydon and Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer.
