Should town be 30km/h zone?
A question as to whether Kilcullen Main Street should be a 30km/h zone was raised at the recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action, writes Brian Byrne.
Martin Sheridan said he had watched traffic going down the hill from Centra towards the square and believed the 50km/h current limit might be too fast for the conditions, especially with the high level of HGV traffic.
Cllr Fiona McLoughlin Healy told the meeting that in discussions with the Director of Transport in Kildare County Council, she had been told that there are two kinds of traffic calming which are effective in slowing traffic, rather than using ramps.
“They are flashing speed signs, or the ‘gateway’ type of calming,” she said. She added that the flashing signs, at around €20,000 per installation, are substantially less expensive than the gateway constructions.
The Garda will be consulted on the speed limit situation.
