Trees planting book available for signing

A book of record for the trees planted for the people of Kilcullen in April is available for signing to those who weren't at the planting day, to have their families associated with the new woodland, writes Brian Byrne. It is in the Heritage Centre, which can be accessed most mornings from 10am.

The event, on the last day of National Tree Week 2019, 6 April, saw a big turnout of family representatives to plant the 700 trees, provided by the Tree Council of Ireland.

The book has been provided by Kay Hartigan of the Tree Council, who has recorded the planting of Holly, Rowan, Spindle, Oak, Birch and Wild Cherry near the Mill Stream on the old Mass Path to New Abbey.

She notes that the turnout on the planting day ranged in age from three years to 93, and the book of record has those families inscribed on the day in alphabetical order.

At last night's meeting of the Kilcullen 700 group, Nessa Dunlea expressed the thanks of the community to Kay Hartigan and the Tree Council. Noel Clare said the book is open to all families who wish to be associated with the trees. He also said the trees are doing very well.

In the book, Kay Hartigan explains that that there will not be any tagging of individual trees, as it is a 'natural woodland' which has been planted.
