Out of Town: Postcards from Enniscorthy

The Post Office sign was one used in the filming of 'Brooklyn'.
A 'pop-up Post Office' with a free postcard offer caught our fancy yesterday on an afternoon trip to the Strawberry Fair in Enniscorthy, writes Brian Byrne.

Under the name DisPatch, the initiative came from three artists — Becks Butler, Astrid Newman and Ciara Roche. As part of their work to develop a public art installation for the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy link, under the PPP Per Cent for Art Scheme, they have been recording the stories of local community groups.

They also photographed objects and activities related to the groups, which include Enniscorthy Men's Shed, youth and historical organisations, sport, music, dance and drama, and others.

The visuals were made into postcards, which provide a wide view of a vibrant Enniscorthy community. Thanks to a grant from Wexford County Council, and the support of An Post, all these postcards were available free for the weekend, complete with stamp, for visitors to send to anywhere in the world.

At the same time, a selection of local heritage items were on display, and audio clips of the gathered local stories available for listening. Coffee, tea and cordials were also free while you browsed.

(All this is an idea we could possibly steal for Kilcullen? ... Mary Orford?)

Meantime, on a very busy bank holiday weekend Enniscorthy was buzzing, with dancers from the locality and Latvia, as well as lots for children including a 'Yellow Brick Road' tour of the castle. And 'Normans' courtesy of the Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society complete with the spoil from a day's hunting for dinner.

We elected instead of that latter to get strawberries ...
