Tell me about the Jockey Stile

In the latest work on the Gates Project being undertaken by Kilcullen Tidy Towns, the one beside the Jockey Stile onto the old Mass Path has been freshened up, writes Brian Byrne.

Now, can anyone enlighten me as to why the stile is called by that name? I've always known it as that since I was a child, but never knew the origin of the name.

(The 'stile' part is easy, it's an old name for a series of steps or rungs by means of which a person may pass over a wall or fence that remains a barrier to sheep or cattle. But who was the Jockey?)
