'Businesses approach' prompted CCTV meeting
An information meeting on the possibility of public CCTV for Kilcullen was arranged following direct approaches by local businesses, a recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action heard, writes Brian Byrne. The public meeting in the Town Hall is taking place this evening, 9 April, beginning at 8.30pm.
Tracey O'Dwyer, who has organised the event, told the meeting that Cllr Ivan Keatley and the Kilcullen Community Text Alert group had been discussing the matter for the last two years, and that there was now more information on issues relating to Freedom of Information and Data Protection.
She was contributing to a discussion on the matter following the gathering of information about CCTV by Pat Mangan on behalf of KCA.
He told the meeting that the installation of such a system would be a matter for the Garda SÃochana to decide, and requires consideration of criteria such as anti-social behaviour and crime. He said that Kilcullen didn't have a high rate of such issues. However, following a serious assault in the town some time ago, the Garda had to go around the local shops to see if anything had been recorded.
He also said that such a system could be used to help with traffic management. As a community scheme it would have to be funded by the town itself, and would have to be managed at a location other than the Garda Station, which would have a slave link to the system for monitoring.
