Kilcullen Badminton update

A good week for Jennifer Monaghan and her Divison 5 Mix team as they qualified for the knock-out stages of the Dublin District League, topping the section with 18 points, writes Kilcullen Badminton Club Match Secretary Enda O'Neill.

Jennifer and the team had to battle hard to finish top as it was still touch and go with two matches left which were played earlier this week. On Tuesday 12 March KBC’s Div 5 Mix visited An Caislean Nua in Roadstone, their previous meeting in the first league match had yielded a draw for the Kilcullen team. Jen's team went one (or two) better when they played this one, beating An Caislean 4-0 and at least securing at worst a second place finish in the group.

On Wednesday 13 March the KBC outfit again hit the road this time to rivals PBAI. The team knew a win would leave them top of the group and they again didn’t disappoint beating their counterparts 3-1 in another solid performance. Jen's team are now the second team to make it to knock-out stages undefeated, with team mate Barry O’Neill the only club member to make the knock-outs on both a mix and mens team which leaves you wondering is he the lucky omen! Well done to Jen, Chelsey Cox, Vincent Coller and Barry on a successful group campaign. Jen and her team will play the Quarter Finals on March 30 and the club wish the team good luck.

Tara O’Neill and the Divison 3 Mix visited Trinity on Tuesday 12 March. This proved to be a very even contest with a 2-2 draw the final result. Tara and her team are still of course in the hunt and currently are second in the group.

Our Division 8 Ladies captained by Teresa McGlynn were also on the road on Tuesday 12 March when they journeyed up to Clann Muire, in a great match for the Ladies they beat Clann Muire 4-0. The Div 8 Ladies have had a very successful season reaching the Dublin District Cup Final, last month. Our Ladies still have two games to play next week, with two home fixtures against Raheny Smashers and Clann Muire. Good luck to the ladies and hopefully they will end their group stages with a two more wins which will give them a chance in making the playoffs.

In the Southwest Knock-out Cup Kilcullen's Grade 3 team kept the hopes alive of bringing the trophy back to the club for the second time in three years, which would be a fantastic achievement. Vincent Coller and his gang travelled to face favourites Portlaoise in Vicarstown and like in all cups the undogs can cause an upset here and there. Vincent and the team beat Portlaoise 4-1 with sets, giving them a home Semi Final against Ladylane from Waterford City. Well done to Vincent, Tara O’Neill, Chelsey C.McDonald, Caroline (indeed) Sheedy, Bernie Smyth, John McGrane, John Mullen and Owen Wallace.
Finally good luck to all the teams playing this week.
