KBC South West Champions once more!

Kilcullen's Grade 2 Mix the Grade 2 League Champions.
KBC’s prayers were answered on Thursday 28 February when stand in captain Murt Dunne led the Grade 2 Mix team to another South West League Final in Carlow Lawn Tennis Club, (under the watchful eye of the real boss Lynsey Walsh!!), writes Match Secretary Enda O'Neill. Their opponents the equally talented Baltinglass Badminton Club with whom they had previously drawn with twice in the group stages this season. It would be fair to say that over the last few years its been these two clubs that have dominated the Grade 2 and 3 South West League competitions so this wasn’t going to be an easy ride for “The Rags” on paper.

The clash of the titans started at 8pm with Ladies 1, Sinead Kelly and Clare Faherty facing the Baltinglass pair, our ladies took the bull by the horns taking the game in a nail biting 2-1, turning the 3rd set around to take the game. First Mens Murt and trusty right hand man Gareth Hogan went out and took their game in 2 sets. Our second ladies Tara O’Neill and Rachel Cass made light work in their game winning it in two, David Jackson and Mick Cass went out in second mens and if they could win this one in two sets the League Cup was Kilcullen's. The ever reliable Mick and David stepped up to the mark with Mick sealing the deal with a beautiful backhand drop in a tense 3-setter that clinched the league and ensured KBC lifted the cup. Lynsey and her team would like to thank the club members who travelled to support our champions on the night.

Next up in the South West League is the Grade 2 Cup final which again Kilcullen will contest. From the Club good luck to the team and as Murt says “heres hoping”! This great season for our Grade 2 Mix team also ensures that Kilcullen Badminton Club will have representation in the top Grade in South West League, League 1 next season, opportunities knock for any readers with experience in those leagues and would like to pick up a badminton racquet again!!

In the Grade 6 Knock Out Cup, Olivier P Valroy visited St. Laurences in their Quarter Final clash, KBC had just managed to beat Larries in the League at home but had suffered a defeat in the Larries hall. They weren’t going to be bitten twice and in a fierce contest, Kilcullen got the better of their Laurences counterparts beating them 5-3 in a hard fought match. Well done to Oliver and his team who will either meet Mountmellick or Baltinglass in the Semi Finals.

In Dublin District the yet undefeated Division 4 Men needed two away victories to ensure a semi final spot. First up were An Caislean Nua where Enda (yep me!) and the lads won 3-1 in a convincing performance on Thursday 28 February. Kilcullen Men top of the table with 13 points. The next venue to visit was second place PBAI who with a win could pip Kilcullen to finish top of the group on points. This match was contested on Saturday March 2nd. A fired up KBC team went all the way Tolka Rovers to face the PBAI outfit. PBAI did everything to try throw our men with some very stop start games but the Kilcullen men kept cool heads, never letting their concentration drop. In a fairly one sided affair in the end, “The Rags” won 3-1 putting them top of the section and straight into a Semi Final spot. Enda, and the team Barry O’Neill, John McGrane and Shochan Andrews will play the playoff winners in the first week of April and hope to continue their good streak.
Finally good luck to all the teams playing this week.
