Social Democrats pick candidate for Newbridge-Kilcullen LEA

The Social Democrats have selected Chris Pender to challenge for a seat to represent the people of Newbridge/Kilcullen and surrounds on Kildare County Council at next May's local elections.

Chris is a local community and youth activist and is former Chairperson for Kildare LGBT, a steering committee responsible for setting up of LGBT+ supports in County Kildare.

Speaking after his formal selection in Newbridge town, Chris said: “I’m thrilled to have been selected to run to represent the people of Newbridge, Kilcullen on behalf of the Social Democrats. I firmly believe that it is only through unity in our communities and working together that we can truly shape the Ireland of tomorrow. Through my community volunteering and activism I have worked with groups from all walks of life including the Traveller community, asylum seekers, and people with disabilities. I firmly believe that true representation only comes from people and communities working together to improve our daily lives and our environment.

“As someone who has experienced homelessness on a personal level, I fully understand the difficulties faced by families and individuals who are suffering due to the housing crisis. I am committed to working with local authorities towards a proper social housing initiative, and also to ensure that people who are facing crisis are dealt with in a fair and supportive manner.”
