International flavour to Patrick's Day Parade

Noel Clare shows a suggested design for a representation of the bridge for the KCA St Patrick's Day float, at last night's meeting of the Kilcullen 700 group.
Several international groups have already committed to marching in Kilcullen's St Patrick's Day Parade this year, writes Brian Byrne.

However, the recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action heard that businesses are so far slow to commit to the Parade, which is hoped to be a highlight of the Kilcullen 700 celebration year.

The meeting then discussed the progress on the float being entered on the Tidy Towns theme of the bridge, and recycling. Noel Clare said a trailer and tractor has been arranged, and a design is being prepared for a metal bridge arch which will be the centrepiece of the display.

A 'river' of plastic and lots of plastic bottles will also feature, and a suggestion was made that bottles collected in upcoming litter picks be held back for this purpose.

Antoinette Buckley said it is hoped to have a children's group walking with a banner of the Fairy Trail, which will have been officially opened the previous day. Ray Kelly suggested that it be publicised that children could come to the parade dressed as fairies and elves.

Noel Clare reminded the meeting that the visiting group from Saint-Contest in Normandy, with which Kilcullen is in the process of twinning , will also be taking part.
