Happiness, sadness, at first Memory Monday

On a sad day for the community of Kilcullen when we said goodbye to Liam Sherry RIP, the Meitheal of Memories group held its first Kilcullen 700 Memory Monday event in Kilcullen Heritage Centre, writes Mary Orford.

Attendees from faraway places with strange sounding names like Australia, Newbridge and Mullacash joined with people from Kilcullen to share memories of the town. It proved to be a golden opportunity for a visiting Australian seeking to trace his family roots to talk about his family — Kim Brockhurst (above) was in Kilcullen to trace relatives of Mary Bowen from Grangemore who, in the late 1800s, married William Keegan from Carnalway and they lived in Newtown Villa.

Mary worked in New Abbey and the couple lived in Newtown Villa. We gathered some information for the family but hopefully, we can track down a little bit more for a family that’s part of the diaspora. If anyone has any further information, please let us know.

A gathering of people chatting about the town and its history seemed a fitting tribute so we took time to remember two people, Liam Sherry, RIP, and Noreen Lynch, RIP, who both played such a large part in how Kilcullen grew and developed. Photographs of KDA, the summer carnival, Anthony Linden designed invitations to tennis club hops – all part of Kilcullen’s heritage- were handed around and commented on.
