TD visits CPC young scientists

As well as a large cohort of supporters from their own 1st Year class today, the young CPC students representing the college at the BT Young Scientists Exhibition 2019 welcomed Martin Heydon TD at their stand, writes Brian Byrne.

Hugo Langan and Matthew English explained to the Kildare South FG deputy how their project on the possibilities of using large seaweed algae as an alternative source of fuel to diesel and petrol had been developed.

They were also accompanied by their teachers Eleanor Higgins and Aisling Doyle who looked on with justifiable pride as the very articulate boys brought visitors to the stand through the steps of their experiment, and the results.

Among those visitors were, of course, the judges at the Exhibition, who will be announcing the winners tomorrow evening.

Hugo and Matthew are competing amongst a total of 550 projects at the event in Dublin's RDS.

Your editor had a long and fascinating chat with them about the project, which they chose themselves, according to teacher Eleanor Higgins.

"They brainstormed through a few ideas and decided on this, then came to us to see if it would be OK," she told the Diary today. "After that, we just had to guide them along, helping with some of the science and watching the safety. They designed and produced all the equipment themselves too."

Another highlight of their day was an interview with KFM Radio this afternoon.

(An in-depth report about the boys and their project will feature on the Kilcullen page of the Kildare Nationalist next Tuesday.)
