Grants available for waterway projects

Applications for funding by community groups for improving or conserving aspects of waterways may now be made under the Local Authority Waters Programme, writes Brian Byrne.

Grants of of up to €25,000 will be available under the scheme, for which applications close on Tuesday 12 February 2019.

All community and voluntary groups who wish to assist in the protection and management of water quality, both locally and in the wider catchment, are eligible to apply.

Projects can include the development of a catchment partnership or River/Lake Trust, and delivery of local projects to protect and improve water quality in a local waterbody. These may include restoration, habitat conservation, and natural flood mitigation measures.

Projects that promote public awareness, education, and events such as biodiversity days, and training workshops also come under the ambit of the scheme.

General amenity such as beach clean, improving amenity areas, the building of bird watching facilities and similar may qualify.

Grants awarded, depending on type of activity, will range from up to €5,000; up to €10,000 and up to €25,000. The fund is capped at €180,000 for 2019.
