Kilcullen Badminton Club week

A great week for the club and especially the ladies with our Grade 2 and Grade 6 'Ragettes' competing in their South West Ladies Finals, writes Match Secretary Enda O’Neill.

First out were the Grade 2 Ladies  (above) captained by Lynsey Walsh. Lysney and her team have dominated the Grade 2 League and remained undefeated all season and were determined to keep their one hundred per cent record. Their final was played in Carlow LTC on Tuesday 4th December against Carlow YM, who were determined to put a stop to the Kilcullen girls success. The Ragettes started strong with Lynsey and Tara winning their game in two sets, Siobhan Willis and Sinead Kelly followed suit in second ladies also winning it in two sets and leaving Lynsey and Siobhan needing only to win a set in the third game to be crowned champions. Lynsey and Siobhan weren’t going to let the side down, keeping their cool to win that set giving the Kilcullen girls a fantastic win and KBC’s first trophy of the season. Well done to Lynsey, Siobhan, tara and Sinead on a fantastic win and being crowned the SWL Grade 2 champions.

Friday the 7th of December our Grade 6 Ladies travelled to Athy to face a strong Portlaoise side. Captain Teresa McGlynn and her team have had a tough run to the final after finishing joint second in their group stages. This meant the KBC Ladies had to play an extra match to secure a semi final spot and after beating Mountmellick. Kilcullen and Portlaoise have been great rivals this season, with Kilcullen loosing one match and drawing one match previously in the group stages. This was going to be a close final. After the first two games it was honours even. Portlaoise won the third but had a set in hand. KBC needed to win the last game in two sets to bring it to points countback and have a chance of winning the match, unfortunately the girls lost a set in that game handing the trophy to Port. Hard luck to Teresa, Orla Brophy, Lynda Murtagh and Maeve Valroy on a great season.

In other news Kilcullen's Grade 2 and Grade 3 Mix teams got their South West League competitions underway and again with mixed outcomes. Martin Dunne and the grade 2 Mix travelled to Baltinglass on Monday 3rd December and came away with a respectable 4-4 draw. Thursday 6th December Jennifer Costello hosted their Baltinglass Grade 3 counterparts but were defeated 5-3 in a highly entertaining match. In the Dublin District League Jennifer and her Div 5 Mix team played away to St Brigid's and secured a 2-2 draw bouncing back from being 2-0 down after the mens and ladies games only to win their two mix games to secure a draw.

Ross Coles Division 7 Men hosted Baldoyle District in the 2nd round of the Dublin District Cup and won it comprehensively 3-0 putting them into the Quarter Final. A fine display of badminton from Ross, Kasi, Keith and super sub Rahm.

Best of luck to our teams in the next round of matches.
