GIY fund available to community groups, schools

Groups and organisations in Kilcullen who want to start a community food-growing project in their area can apply to the Energia Get Ireland Growing fund for grants, writes Brian Byrne.

The fund is operated by the Waterford-based Grow It Yourself movement, and there's €75,000 available to support some 86 projects across Ireland.

It's the sixth year of the initiative, and applications close on 25 January 2019. Grants can range from €500 to €2,000, and one group will receive €5,000. Further information and application at giy.ie.

To date, €417,000 has been distributed through the initiative. Flagship projects so far include a grow garden for the Irish Wheelchair Association Centre in Carlow (2017), the Recovery Garden in Kilkenny (2017), Knockanrawley Resource Centre Organic Garden Tipperary (2018), Camphill in Dingle County Kerry (2018), at the Ballymun Adult Read and Write Scheme in Dublin (2018), the Dublin Migrant Women Community Garden (2018), Recovery Haven in Kerry (2017), and last year’s overall winner of The Today Show fund of €5,000 (2018) — The Edible Landscape Project, a training and education initiative in Westport, Co Mayo.
