No change to weekend power outage plan
There will be no change to the schedule of power outages in Kilcullen for three days over and beyond this weekend, writes Brian Byrne.
In a follow-up to yesterday's interview with Antoinette Buckley on KFM radio, Cllr Fintan Brett told Clem Ryan on KFM's Kildare Today that he had discussed the options with ESB Networks and had been told the programme couldn't be changed, because of 'scheduling' arrangements with tree-cutting contractors.
He was told that the work was necessary because a number of trees across Kilcullen's business and residential areas were very close to wires, and in the event of winter storms, damage could cause further power outages.
According to the ESB spokesman, they had scheduled the work to be done around the school areas on Saturday, near industrial estates on Sunday and — on the basis that Monday might be the least busy day in town — that the works in the main business areas are being done on that day.
Dr Deirdre Collins from the Kilcullen Family Practice has been in touch with the Diary to say they will also have to close on Monday. "We took the decision in previous power cuts that we cannot operate safely with no power," she says.
There's also some confusion because some households have been notified that there will be an all-day power cut on Saturday.
In Sunbury, different homes got different notices, referencing the Saturday or the Monday. One home got separate notices about cuts on both days.
