A new community association for residents of the Old Kilcullen area will represent around 120 homes in the townlands of Oldkilcullen, Glebe North, Glebe South and Halverstown, writes Brian Byrne.

Its formation Special General Meeting on Thursday 18 October in Halverstown National School is the culmination of a number of exploratory meetings held over recent months in the area.

"We have had very enthusiastic interest in the project," says Sabina Reddy, noting that the initiative was first suggested during an informal chat in Walls of Kilgowan.

In part, the forming of the association is to allow applications for grants and other local authority supports for the area, and a representative from Kildare County Council has already discussed this with the ad hoc group.

"We also see it as a way of increasing social interaction among the residents in the area, many of whom are relatively recent arrivals," Sabina says.

The association will also be a point of focus for the several important local heritage elements, the central one being the remains of the original monastic settlement of Old Kilcullen.

"But we'll also be seeking attention to the real-world issues of today … for instance, we've already had some very robust discussions on the need for keeping the roads in the area in good repair."

The formation of the association is a logical follow-on to the establishment some years ago of a local Text Alert system in the area, which has since expanded to other rural areas around Kilcullen and into residential parts of the town itself.
