A reminder that a fund to help communities to develop and manage their local waterways has opened applications for this year, writes Brian Byrne. The closing date for applications is 28 May.

Operated by the Local Authority Waters & Communities Office, the Community Water Development Fund 2018 is aimed at helping communities get more involved in the management of their local water environment.

Projects which can be supported include restoration, habitat conservation, and natural flood mitigation.

Public awareness and education projects related to local waterways may also be eligible for funding, along with biodiversity day events, surveys, and training workshops.

Beach cleaning, improving amenity areas, and provision of bird watching facilities will also be considered.

The grants available are in three categories — up to €5,000, up to €10,000, and up to €25,000.

The closing date for applications, which are open to all community and voluntary groups, is Monday 28 May at 7pm.

Application details are available at the Waters and Communities Office website.
