For Valentine's Day, how about the gift of time?
As St Valentine's Day coincides with Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, this coming week, it may cause a conundrum for some of those who give or receive Valentine gifts, writes Brian Byrne. For Lent-observing Catholics, it's not quite the occasion to swop boxes of chocolates or dine out.
Well, the World Meeting of Families group, busy preparing for the visit of Pope Francis to Ireland, came up with an interesting alternative — a booklet of vouchers which are essentially 'gifts of time' to be shared between loved ones.
The eight vouchers offer 'A journey down memory lane - taking time to remember how we met'; 'A special meal cooked by me'; 'A technology free evening together'; 'Time together to pray'; 'A hand-in-hand walk together'; 'Loads of tender hugs'; 'A family outing'; and 'Praying you find that special someone'.
The idea is inspired by 'The Joy of Love', a letter from Pope Francis to the world, where he emphasises the fundamental importance of time together and personal communication. Pope Francis reminds that it is important to take time to show love for one another. It is a gift for your whole life! Time together and simple, respectful communication builds a love that lasts.
They're free of charge ... and come with a Valentine's card too.
The booklets are available in Kilcullen & Gormanstown Churches. They can also be downloaded on the World Meeting of Families 2018 website.
(ED NOTE: I tried that link, but can't find the downloadable vouchers; if you want, call 01 5676900 and they may be able to help.)
