Badminton update

A busy week this week for the badminton club, writes KBC PRO Enda O'Neill, with nine matches being played both home and away between Wednesday 22 February and Saturday 25 February

First out were Owen Wallace and his Grade 3 Mix team who hosted Ballinabranna in their South West League group game. In an entertaining match Owen and the team roller coasted the Ballinabranna side beating them 7-1 in a one sided match. This fantastic win has ensured a semi final spot for the KBC octuplets! Well done to Owen and his team on a great win and good luck to the team in the semi finals.

Also out in the SWL were Jen Monaghan and the Grade 4 Mix team who played Kildare in their semi final match hosted in Carlow LTC on Saturday 25 February. Jen unfortunately couldn’t make the match due to other commitments so in stepped Orla Brophy to take her place. Kilcullen did themselves proud however and were only beaten 5-3 by their rivals, with Kildare taking the first Ladies without even stepping on court as one of the Kilcullen ladies was late getting to the match due to a delayed flight. That ladies might have been the difference and the Kildare team knew it. So Jen and her team will now have to wait for the SWL Knockout Cup to try get some silverware this season. Well done to all the team and a special thanks to Orla for subbing in for Jen, it was Orla's first ever Mix match and she rose to the occasion playing some brilliant badminton.

This week in the Dublin District League Tara O’Neill and her Division 4 Ladies visited St Brigid's this time with two subs. The capable Sarah Walshe and Chelsey Cox steeped in and they won the first ladies, the KBC ladies lost the second game, but in the third game Sarah and Siobhan Willis won in two sets. Unfortunately Bernie Smith and Chelsey lost the fourth game to a very strong St Brigid's ladies pair. KBC securing a fantastic 2-2 draw in a difficult hall. Well played Bernie, Siobhan, Chelsey and Sarah.

Olivier P Valroy and the Division 9 Mix team hosted Raheny on Friday 25 February. Olivier and his team were fourth in the table before this match and needed at best a 3-1 win to leapfrog Raheny and to put some pressure on Bray and St Brigid's. Olivier had to draft in Morgan Hennessy into the team for this one. The KBC quartet did not disappoint and beat Raheny 3-1 in a great game of badminton. This puts the Kilcullen side third in the table one point behind Greystones and two points behind St Brigid's. More importantly it keeps Kilcullen Mix 9 still in the hunt to get out of the group, Well done to Olivier, Meave Valroy, Tersea McGlynn and sub Morgan.

Finally Tara and the Division 5 Mix team hosted table toppers St. Killian's in the complex on Friday 25 February in this, a must win game. The Mix 5 team were third in the group on 7 points before this match with PBAI in second on 10 points. John Mullen and Vincent Coller got the team off to a great start winning their mens, Tara and Chelsey then followed suit winning the ladies. Tara and John kept the run going winning first mix and puttin KBC 3-0 up going into the last. Chelsey and Vincent put in a monster effort in their match and were beaten in three sets in the last game, but more importantly however Kilcullen got the 3-1 win. This win puts Kilcullen second in the table putting the pressure back on PBAI and keeping Killians in touch. Well done Tara, Chelsey, John and Vincent on a great win.
