What's in a Kilcullen placename?

Is it Chapel Road, Mile Mill Road or New Abbey Road? Where is the Jockey Stile? Or the Back Lane? Is there a name for the back road into Cnoc na Greine?

These are just a few of the questions that might be answered or decided on at tonight’s Public Meeting in the Town Hall, writes Brian Byrne.

Whether you’re a newcomer or a multigenerational resident, this event organised by Kilcullen Community Action aimed at straightening out street and place names in the town should be of interest if only to enable you to give directions to lost visitors.

It should also be pretty fascinating to get some insight into how some long-established names in Kilcullen came about.

The main idea is to devise a plan to comprehensively and coherently sign each street and public place so that we all might know where we’re going in years and decades to come.

It’s also an opportunity to consider the provision of an up to date town map which could be used as the basis for visitor information, fitness walks, heritage tours, and even an interactive Kilcullen app.

The meeting gets going at 8pm. All welcome. Bring your questions. And any answers you might have too.
