Talks at Moate of Ardskull tomorrow morning
The County Kildare Federation of Local History Groups is visiting the Moate of Ardscull, tomorrow, on the 700th anniversary of the creation of the 1st Earl of Kildare and also the Battle of Ardscull/Battle of Skerries which happened in 1316. There were also attacks on Rathangan and on Kildare Castle so it is of interest on a number of fronts.
The meeting takes place at 11am and the event will include a series of short talks and exploration of the Moate.
Colm Flynn of Skerries House will detail the Moate’s isolation from its surroundings. It is an island almost surrounded by bog land. It is off all the old routes through South Kildare. This accounts for the dearth of info available.
Marc Guernon will give a talk on Medieval Athy, while Mario Corrigan and James Durney will give a very short account of the 1st Earl of Kildare and the Scots invasion and the Battle of Skerries.
There will be tea and coffee afterwards at the nearby Moate Lodge courtesy of the Federation. The event is free and all are welcome.
