Tree to commemorate Kilcullen war dead

A tree will be planted in the grounds of Kilcullen Community Library on November 15 to commemorate local men who fought and died in World War 1, writes Brian Byrne.

The event, at 2pm, will be the last of a number organised this year by the Kilcullen Great War Commemoration Group, and prayers will be said by local clergy for those from the Kilcullen area who fell in the war, now known to number 34. Everybody in the community is welcome to attend and light refreshments will be served afterwards.

Other events during the year included a talk on life in the trenches and a visit to the training trenches on The Curragh, a night of memories involving families who had someone who served in the war, and a concert and drama evening on the theme of World War 1.

A special banner was designed by Kieran Behan and placed in the Square. It incorporates the face of Joseph Keating, a great-uncle of the Group's leader, Julie O'Donoghue. During the tree planting, soil from the area in France where he died will be mixed in with the roots to symbolise a reconnection with Kilcullen's war dead.

The activities of the Group have been helped by a grant from Kildare County Council.
