Credit Union motion at MD deferred

A motion asking that Kildare County Council call on four named Credit Unions to consider combining in order to provide credit union facilities for Newbridge was deferred at yesterday's meeting of the Naas Municipal District, writes Brian Byrne.

The motion had been put on the agenda by Cllr Mark Lynch of Sinn Fein, who told the Diary today that it would be revisited but without specifying any particular credit unions.

The Councillor had admitted in advance of the meeting that he hadn't officially contacted the named Credit Unions of Kilcullen, Kildare Town, Coill Dubh or Rathangan to see if they were interested in such a proposition, or to inform them that he was naming them on a motion.

"I had discussed the idea with certain groups, whom I won't name," he said today. "My idea was to highlight the plight of former Newbridge Credit Union members, but it's a delicate matter as to whether I should discuss such a thing with management or members of credit unions. I think a wrong impression of what I was doing went out."

After a number of years in control of a court-appointed Special Manager, and a failure to find another credit union to amalgamate with, the member accounts in Newbridge Credit Union were transferred to Permanent TSB in the town just over a year ago.
