Badminton club to feature on TV
Kilcullen Badminton Club will feature on BadmintonIrelandTV later this year, writes Brian Byrne.
The Club was approached recently about making arrangements for a filming session in early summer, with the segment provisionally scheduled for transmission in the autumn.
"They focus on proactive clubs on their video magazine, and they said we seem to be doing a lot of work down here," says Club chairman Mark Phelan.
Kilcullen Badminton Club was started in 1981 by Marie Kelly and runs both an adults and a Juvenile club. There are around 90 members between both grades.
Badminton Ireland was founded in 1899, took part in the first international badminton match against England in 1903 and was founding member of the World Badminton Federation in 1934. Ireland has one of the largest badminton memberships per capita in the world, with over 400 clubs.
The organisation's high performance programme based at Marino Institute in Dublin resulted in sending two Olympians to London 2012 and three are on track for Rio 2016. There are over 16,000 registered players in Ireland and an estimated 100,000 playing the game regularly.
