South African art in Naas

A short exhibition in Naas Library next week will offer a taste of South African art in a very individual style.

'Coral Earth' is a collection from Calan Galugan's work in the intriguing genre of crushed glass painting. The KwaZulu-Natal based artist also works in acrylics and oils, and his subjects are the people, animals and landscapes of that province of South Africa not far from Durban.

The ethnic mixes of the original Zulu nation with British and Dutch settlers show through in many of the portrait works, and the artist has a powerful ability to bring out strength in gentle or even vulnerable situations. His animals and landscapes are at the same time striking and sensitive.

Galugan came to Ireland last autumn. The exhibition runs through 20-22 February.
