'We want Kilcullen.ie'
A lack of response from the IT department in Kildare County Council on the possibility of using Kilcullen.ie for the planned Kilcullen internet portal was raised at the recent meeting of Kilcullen 2017, writes Brian Byrne.
The portal sub-group said they had registered KilcullenTown.com for the initiative, but would prefer if they could use the town's name with the .ie suffix as a domain.
The fact that Athy had apparently been given permission to do so with Athy.ie was discussed.
All the .ie domains for towns and villages in County Kildare were taken up by Kildare County Council years ago when the Council set up the Kildare Community Network.
The meeting heard that this was done in part to eliminate the possibility of 'cowboy' operators taking the domains.
The sub-group has been trying to get permission from the Council to use Kilcullen.ie for the portal, but the meeting was told that no direct response had been received to their request.
Armelle Soimboing said the group had also established KilcullenTown on Twitter, and would shortly be opening a Facebook page under the name.
Conor Williams told the meeting that the idea was to make Kilcullen more known outside the town and 'bring people in'.
Armelle Soimboing also noted that there was a national opportunity to do this with the 'Best Place to Live' competition on the Irish Times website.
"The closing date is 31 May, and even if we don't win it, it's free, and if as many people as possible fill in the details, it's worth it," she concluded.
