First Aid course begins Monday

A first aid course beginning in Kilcullen on Monday night is aimed at eventually having a corps of St John Ambulance based in the town, writes Brian Byrne.

Personnel from the South Kildare Division will conduct the course at the KARE McMahon Centre beside CPC.

The lessons will be available to both 'cadets' aged 11-16 and adults, from 7-9pm for the younger group, 8-10pm for the adults. Enrolment for both groups is at 7pm on Monday next, 19 September.

The Basic First Aid course will run through to Christmas, and there is a nominal charge of €3 per person per night.

At the end of the course, any of the group who wish to join St John Ambulance will be enrolled.

gerid“All participants will be fully trained and certified in First Aid at the end of the sessions,” says Geri Dineen, who has organised the course. Geri is a member of Kilcullen First Responders, and she also hopes that if a St John Ambulance corps becomes a reality in Kilcullen, it will also get an ambulance based here.

“As First Responders we often come across situations that are outside our own particular brief, which mainly deals with cardiac issues. If we have fully certified First Aid personnel in the town, it will enhance the chances of people involved in accidents getting quick treatment.”

Geri emphasises that taking the course does not involve any commitment to joining St John Ambulance. “It is also ideal for anyone who simply wants First Aid knowledge.”
