Look out for seniors

Elderly people face isolation and loneliness as severe weather conditions make it impossible for seniors to leave the home, according to Amanda Bohan of Home Instead Senior Care, who urges people to remember older family, friends and neighbours in their communities during the harsh winter weather.

"Since the majority of seniors are confined to the home they have been deprived of company and have not been able to carry out basic activities such as going to the shop for milk or bread," Amanda says. "Our caregivers have been providing them with companionship and assistance with daily living activities, such as providing transport to and from appointments or to the supermarket.

"However, there are many seniors without caregivers who could benefit with extra help and companionship. I encourage everyone to remember and care for elderly loved ones and help seniors avoid feeling isolated and lonely."

Kilcullen Parish is also asking people to keep an eye on their elderly neighbours. "If there's a problem, let us know at the Parish Office and we'll make contact with the Society of St Vincent de Paul or whatever is needed," says pastoral worker Hannah Evans.
