An electricity outage at lunchtime today discommoded more than 700 customers in Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne.
The 3-hour outage was due to a line fault in the area. Restaurants, pubs and other businesses were affected as well as private homes. A number of burglar alarms went off due to bettery failures.
The service was restored in mid-afternoon, the ESB says ahead of forecast.
Brannockstown, Calverstown and Narraghmore are three local areas which will eventually benefit from a new €1bn broadband fibre network to be rolled out by the State across rural areas of Ireland.
The scheme will make it much easier for broadband companies to offer high speed internet access in areas of the country which currently have little or no commercial speed broadband. About 1,000 communities around Ireland have been identified for the upgrade, including 18 in south Kildare.
Deputy Martin Heydon has welcomed the announcement, and says he's continuing his survey to identify other areas in the constituency which need the access.The survey can be accessed here.
Kilcullen is to get fibre-optic broadband by 2015, significantly improving internet service in the area.
This will happen with the upgrading of seven of Eircom's hubs in County Kildare. Along with the Kilcullen hub upgrade, improvements are being made in the Curragh Camp, Kill, Monasterevin, Prosperous, Robertstown and
Rathangan.
It all, the current plan is to upgrade 78 hubs nationally to fibre-optic by 2015.
