Big programme for Field of Dreams opening
A 'fireside chat' with GAA inter-county stars will be a highlight feature of the official opening of Kilcullen GAA's Field of Dreams on 20 September, writes Brian Byrne. It will follow the ribbon-cutting ceremony during an afternoon of games, exhibition matches and music, starting at 2pm.
The latest milestone in the club's history has seen the development of expanded playing facilities, a floodlit training area, a skills wall, and a community walkway, brought to life through years of planning, fundraising, and local support.
The plans for the project were first revealed in September 2022, expanding the size of the club on eight acres of land beyond the existing main pitch. The development progressed in association with pitch design consultant Richard Hayden and the club's design team, Martin Murphy, Barry Griffith and Trevor Schwer.
Work commenced on the almost €1 million development in February 2023, including importing and levelling some 9,300 cubic metres of filling soil. A range of club fundraising initiatives, partnerships with local businesses, and a GAA loan is funding the project. Kilcullen GAA has grown from a small club that often struggled for numbers to field games to one with over 1,000 members, fielding multiple teams in most GAA and LGFA competitions, and successfully reintroduced hurling and camogie.
With the completion of the project in sight, Martin Murphy has commended the community-driven effort built on belief, hard work, and a shared vision. "We're incredibly proud to see the Field of Dreams become a reality for Kilcullen," he says. Club chairperson Trevor Schwer says it's a testament to the club and community's spirit, ambition, and unity. "The Field of Dreams represents a place where future generations will grow, play, and succeed,” he adds.
