No pay-parking plans for Kilcullen
There's no intention of introducing pay parking in Kilcullen through the proposed bye-laws, writes Brian Byrne. That was made clear by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer at yesterday's meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD.
The councillor had asked the council to consider making the regulations during a current review of such bye-laws throughout the county. She said the idea would be to 2/3-hour maximum stays which would allow people to park to do some shopping or have lunch and still allow for a turnover of parking spaces. "Kilcullen has very limited parking, and to prevent people just driving through the town and not stopping to do business in Kilcullen because they can't find parking it’s no harm to look at every option available to support business," she said. "There is already a KCC warden that visits Kilcullen and it would become part of his job."
Officials said the Transport Department will consider the potential for the bye-laws introduction, which would require the approval of the members and, if implemented, it would most likely extend beyond the main street to reduce the impact of parking bye-laws on residential developments and amenities. The meeting was also told that the ongoing review of existing bye-laws will impact on the timescale of such a process, but the matter will be raised at the Transport, Mobility and Open Spaces Strategic Policy Committee for consideration as part of the 2025 Work Programme which includes parking policy.
