Skills Wall lands

Like a version of the monoliths which featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Kilcullen GAA Skills Wall appeared yesterday, writes Brian Byrne. Part of the walkway was closed to allow for the construction traffic that brought the precast sections.
Unlike the black cuboids purportedly built by an extraterrestrial species in the Arthur C Clarke science fiction stories, the latest addition to the grounds will play a real part in the future development of the club and its players. A Skills Wall is a purpose-built rebound surface that allows footballers, hurlers and camogie players to practice striking, catching, blocking, and footwork on their own or in small groups. It has become a key component in modern coaching at all levels of the game.
It's the final major element in the €1 million Field of Dreams initiative aimed at developing Kilcullen as a powerhouse in GAA games.
