Local writer in new anthology on autism

Local writer, photographer, and climate activist Cliona Kelliher is one of the contributors to a recently published book of essays by autistic adults, writes Brian Byrne. So successful has Wired Our Own Way been since publication that it is already in a second printing.
The anthology of 21 essays highlights the wide range of experiences within the neurodivergent community in Ireland and also explores the impact which receiving a diagnosis of the condition brings. It is a timely publication against the background of recent research which suggests that one in 20 Irish schoolchildren is now identified as autistic.
The book is edited by Niamh Garvey, a Cork-based author with autism. Cliona Kelliher’s essay The Magic of Books is a reflection on her love of books through her life. “It’s also about how that connects to the intense interests that autistic people often have,” she told the Diary. “My essay also observes that, though autism is often framed in a deeply negative way, there are aspects like autistic joy which are very positive.”
When a call-out for essay contributions was made last year, Cliona submitted her piece. “Then there were several short-listing processes and I was thrilled to be accepted. After that I worked through edits with the editors and the book was released in March.”
Wired Our Own Way was on the Hodges Figgis best-seller list for three weeks. Published by New Island Books, it is available locally in Woodbine Books at €16.95.
