Halverstown CC heroes 2024

Andy Wordley, Halverstown 1 Player of the Year, receives his award from 2024 captain John Threadgold.

As Halverstown Cricket Club prepares for the opening of the 2025 season with its “nets” practice sessions in Pipers Hill College, it also took the opportunity to recognise the outstanding performers of 2024. Ahead of a recent intra club warm-up game, Player of the Season Awards were presented by the 2024 captains of Halverstown 1, Halverstown 2 and The Oaks- its social team.
For Halverstown 1 the recipient was Andy Wordley, playing in just his second season with the club. Such has been the impact that Andy has made thathe has been made captain for 2025. Former captain John Threadgold praised the solid batting of Andy that made him such a regular for Halverstown1. Des Drumm, captain of Halvertown 2 last season, presented Player of the Year to Junaid Khan, who excelled with both bat and ball and scored a notable 101 not out against Terenure as well as taking 6 wickets against Merrion. Ger O’Shea, Oaks captain, presented the Player of the Year to a youth player, Brandon Langford, who also showed that he could both bat and bowl and indeed field well too. This completed a hat-trick for Newbridge, where all three players live!

Thanks to the generosity of the Beaumont family, Halverstown plays on a beautiful ground on the banks of the Liffey in Brannockstown and in recent years has expanded its playing base significantly. This season will see two league teams, two T20 Cup teams and The Oaks being supplemented by four- yes, four- youth teams. There will be both boys and girls under 13s playing in Cricket Leinster leagues and also an under 15s girls team. An under 15s boys team will play in a midland league.
This is the first team in a long history dating back to 1885 that the club has had multiple youth teams and the first time ever it has fielded a girls team. Des Drumm, Chairman, noted “The work at youth level has been prodigious and we must thank our Secretary Stuart Conroy, recipient of the prestigious Cricket Ireland Award of Activator of the Year for his work with youth cricket, as well as his team of activators. This started with a handful of schools and they now coach in 10 schools in Kildare, which will help to keep cricket thriving in the county”.
