CPC pupil scores category podium place in Texaco Children's Art
Cross and Passion College pupil Mae Cowper Gray has won second prize in the 14-15 years category in the 71st Texaco Children’s Art Competition, writes Brian Byrne. She is pictured here with her work entitled Della's Resolve (My Determined Sister) with her sister Della and mum Elaine.
Her work was described by the final adjudicator — Irish visual artist, curator and educator Pauline O'Connell — as a work which 'captures a moment with great accuracy'. "With textural precision, the artist renders the knitted hat, skin, hair and fabric with a delicacy of touch using coloured pencils.”
Mae won first prize in the 9-11 years age category of the competition in 2021. In 2020, Della herself was one of four Kildare child artists to win an award, for her portrait of her brother, The Mighty Finn. Their father is artist Brad Gray.
The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is popularly regarded as the longest-running sponsorship in the history of arts sponsoring in Ireland, going back to 1955. It has been a platform on which young artists from Kildare and counties throughout Ireland have had their talents recognised and their creativity commended.
