January cinema: My Favourite Cake

A wonderfully sweet and funny film, My Favourite Cake is the perfect film for the new year, writes Teresa Nurse of Kilcullen Bridge Cinema. It is the charming portrayal of 70 year-old Mahin and her appetite for romance, screening on Wednesday 15 January.
Mahin has lived as a widow in Tehran for over 30 years. She fondly remembers life in Iran before the Islamic Revolution, but now she cannot even visit her Europe-based daughter, because she is considered too old to be granted a visa by authorities. Refusing to accept a lonely future, Mahin takes matters into her own hands when she meets taxi-driver Faramarz. Throwing caution to the wind, an unforgettable and unpredictable evening unfolds for the pair.
This film is a moving reflection on old age, loneliness and finding unexpected love. Both humorous and poignant at turns, and featuring a wonderful performance by Lily Farhadpour as Mahin, it is sure to charm and touch audiences.
Tickets €7, available as usual from Woodbine Books and Eventbrite. Doors open 7.30pm for 8pm start.
