Consistent improvement in Tidy Towns

Noel Clare, Tony O'Sullivan and Martin Sheridan were in Croke Park yesterday for the awards announcement.

An extra 16 marks for Kilcullen in the Supervalu Tidy Towns 2024 competition came from improvements right across the categories, writes Brian Byrne. As previously reported, they also gained the town a silver medal, to add to the bronze won last year.
In adjoining communities, Brannockstown was awarded 308 marks, an advance of 13 on the 2023 performance, while Calverstown achieved 344 marks, improving by 11.
Kilcullen's 372 marks for 2024 are from a maximum 550 achievable, and that the overall winner Ballincollig in Co Cork got 386 marks shows that the Kilcullen performance is a very respectable contender. The silver medal was for coming within 15 marks of the overall winner's. The medal comes with a cash prize of €700.
Kilcullen Tidy Towns group has also been awarded €2,000 from a €1.5 million grants pot announced by Minister Heather Humphreys for the 900-odd Tidy Towns groups nationwide to help in the 2025 competition.
In the adjudication categories, Kilcullen gained three marks each in Green Spaces & Landscaping and in Nature & Biodiversity. Two extra marks each were given in Planning & Involvement, Streetscape & Public Space, Sustainability and Residential Streets & Housing Areas. Tidiness & Litter Control and Approach Roads, Streets & Lanes categories gained one mark each.
In the 2023 competition, Kilcullen gained 18 marks over the previous year.
A more detailed report will be in the November Bridge, which goes on sale on Saturday 9 November.
