Calendar Girls is a sold-out masterpiece

There's little point in my urging you to go to the Kilcullen Drama Group's production of Calendar Girls, writes Brian Byrne. Because not only is this week's original run sold out, but also are those extra nights put on for next week.
Directed by Eilis Philips, this deserves to go down as one of the best ever Kilcullen Drama Group presentations. The 10-woman main cast are quite individually brilliant, and collectively a masterpiece of drama, pathos, comedic hilarity and gentle (some of the time) ribaldry. There are, of course, a few men in there too, whose characterisations have the good sense not to even try and shine as brightly as the ladies and are therefore also played close to perfection.
A word about the set design and construction team, and the backstage crew who manage the changes so well: just brilliant. A recalcitrant door at one point provided its own interesting sidebar drama in one of the semi-darkness operations.
And that was just the first half, which was all the Diary was able to stay for. A few of our photos provide a sense of the evening, and a taster for all those who were lucky enough to get their tickets early. Bravo, all concerned.
NOTE: The cast have also produced a real 2025 calendar, the funds from which are going to the Oncology Day Ward in Naas Hospital. We understand a second printing has already been required.
