Long awaited, but the waiting is over and An Tearmann has reopened at the bridge in Kilcullen, writes Brian Byrne. Now operated by David Hogan and his wife Salima, the enterprise is managed by Patsy Simion and a cheerful crew of kitchen, barista and floor staff, and quietly welcomed first customers this morning.
The cafe will be open from 8am to 4pm, with an initial menu that includes breakfast and lunch dishes all freshly prepared as well the now-famous Creans breads and pastries.
Examples are Scrambled Eggs with Chives and Soda Bread, Honey Glazed Ham and mature white Cheddar, Tomato Relish, Sourdough and Mixed Leaves and Coleslaw. There are soups, salads and vegetarian options. "We'll develop the menu further as we see what our customers want," says Patsy.
The decor is brighter than the cafe that closed with the pandemic and which before that had become a main meeting place in Kilcullen. But the essential shape of things will be familiar to customers of the old An Tearmann, with some fresh detail individual artworks including ceramics by local artist Lesley Kelly.
With the run-up to Christmas now in full swing, the reopening of what was always a favourite space at this time of the year is very welcome.
