Who's in the New Abbey graveyard?
Eugene Brennan made the Diary aware of this undated photograph of the Portlester Effigy in New Abbey Graveyard, which was moved in 2001 by Kildare County Council to a less weathering site against a wall of the graveyard.
The photograph is in the possession of the Kildare County Archives and Local Studies and from the clothing of the people in the picture could easily date back to the 1930s or 1940s.
Wouldn't it be really great if someone knew the identity of the man standing at the wall, and the two boys in the oldest part of the graveyard behind the wall, standing on the large headstone marking the grave of a former parish priest?
Any ideas out there? Family resemblances, perhaps?
UPDATE: Eugene Brennan has done a further bit of sleuthing and worked out that this photo predates a photograph in the Lawrence Collection, which puts it somewhere in the years before 1914. It also seems probable that the people in the photo — including one hidden by railings — may have been waiting for a funeral, maybe coming along the Mass Path?
