More excremental stories
It's not the most wholesome of subjects for Sunday breakfast time, but the Diary has been contacted a number of times in the past week by readers concerned about dog poo, writes Brian Byrne. Specifically it being left on public footpaths, creating both mess and health hazard.
The picture above was taken by a reader on the bridge one recent morning. All from the one dog. The owner can't have missed it.
Particularly worrying is the story from the reader who came across fresh excrement on the footpath in front of Scoil Bhride while walking this week with her younger lad to collect his older brother. "I had to step in it to avoid my 2-year-old walking in it," she told the Diary. "It wasn't very pleasant."
Noting how much the community appreciates what the Tidy Towns group do to keep the town clean, our reader adds that the offending dog owners should have a bit more respect and be aware of others walking. "Many of us have small children walking to school and the last thing parents need is for either them or their child walking in it."
This is not the fault of dogs, of course. Uncaring owners are the culprits. The problem is caused by a very small minority among the dog-owning community, because it is your editor's experience when out on my own walks that those I meet with a dog are almost all carrying those essential little bags.
But it only takes a couple of miscreants to foul things for everyone.
