Looking Back: Naas Ball put into place

It's a landmark that pretty well everyone in a car around here passes by at some time in their commuting week, and is probably Ireland's best-known sculpture.
From the clippings collection of PJ Lydon, this picture by the late Adrian Melia shows the Naas Ball, properly known as the sculpture Perpetual Motion, being lowered into position in November 1995.
The piece was commissioned by Kildare County Council and produced by Remco de Fouw and Rachel Joynt, both graduates of the National College of Art and Design.
It comprises a 9-metre sphere textured and painted with a tarmac-like surface which depicts various road markings.
