Brennans celebrating 140 years in business
One hundred and forty years of business are recorded in a display in the windows of D Brennan & Sons Ltd, outlining the activity of five generations of the Brennan family in Kilcullen business life, writes Brian Byrne.
The montages include newspaper clippings, advertisements and photographs, and details of the family members involved from the time auctioneer Denis Brennan established the enterprise in 1884, after marrying Theresa Doyle who owned the drapery shop across the road from his place of business.
Diversifying through the years to include grocery, hardware, seeds and feedstuffs, funeral directors and motor engineers, the business consolidated to concentrate on hardware and building materials from the 1960s.
Donal, Denis's grandson, took over in the mid-70s, and today it is being run by Danny, Denis's great grandson, with his wife Lucia and helped by the great great grandsons of the founder, Matthew, Tom, Daniel, John, Rory and Eoin.
