Fine Gael women lead Newbridge LEA tally

After the preliminary sorting of votes in the Newbridge LEA, the first tallies show Tracey O'Dwyer and fellow Fine Gael candidate Peggy O'Dwyer leading in first preferences with 2,030 and 1,938 respectively, writes Brian Byrne.
According to the tally observers, Social Democrat Chris Pender also had a strong first preference performance, garnering 1,407 votes.
With an estimated 1,004 and 824 first preferences respectively, Fianna Fail's Noel Heavey and Rob Power round out the top five, who all happen to be outgoing councillors.
The remaining contenders are Melissa Byrne Aontu 679, and (below) James Stokes SF 625, Aina Conway LAB 610, Tom McDonnell IND 543, James Garvin IND 466, Christoir MacCormaic IND 437, Terri Thorpe SF 371, Ronan Maher GP 178 and Leanne NĂ Neill IND 175.
The actual Newbridge LEA count begins later today, and that's when official figures and prognostications of transfers start to make things really interesting, and mean more biting of nails.
