Slow down on the roads today
Up to yesterday morning, 63 people have been killed on Ireland's roads so far this year, writes Brian Byrne. That compares to 49 for the same period in 2023. Of this year's dead, 26 were drivers, 19 passengers, 12 pedestrians. Four motorcyclists and two pedal cyclists are also among those who never made it home this year.
Today is Slow Down Day on Ireland's roads and An Garda will be paying particular attention to motorists and whether they are complying with the speed limits.
The initiative runs from 7am this morning through to 7am tomorrow (Saturday) morning.
Take note of all speed limits, and drive to appropriate road, weather and traffic conditions within these limits.
