Half century for school that started in Kilcullen

A Newbridge school that had its first years in Kilcullen celebrated its 50th anniversary today, writes Brian Byrne. Families and other special guests at the St Mark's School event included Minister Martin Heydon TD.
A student artwork display and performance was followed by a reception at which guests shared memories.
The school was established by the local charity KARE in the John F Kennedy Hall in Kilcullen in March 1974, catering for students aged 5-18 with mild learning difficulties. The current premises at Piercetown was opened four years later.
Minister Heydon described the school as 'a key pillar of education' in Kildare, and 'very much part of the fabric of our local community'. "Today's celebration is a chance to reaffirm our commitment to creating a society where everyone has access to quality education and opportunities for success."
Also at the celebration were Chairperson of the St Mark's Board of Management Noeleen Burke and CEO of KARE Deirdre Murphy.
Over the 50 years, St Mark's has catered for more than 850 students.
