Equinox gathering on Saturday
The Equinox effect in 2023. |
Today is the Spring Equinox, when both hemispheres of the Earth get an equal amount of light, writes Brian Byrne. On this day and during the Autumn equivalent, the Dun Ailinne monument at Nicholastown offers a spectacular effect just after dawn, if the weather is clear.
The monument was created by local artist Noel Scullion and erected in 2008. The sunrise effect can be viewed on any clear morning during a window of several days on each side of the Equinox.
A tradition has been established that Kilcullen people gather at the spear monument from around 6.30am on the Saturday nearest to the Equinox, to view the event if the weather allows. That will be this coming Saturday, 23 March. Regardless of the weather, everyone is invited back to 1060 Nicholastown for some sausages, brown bread and chat.
All welcome.
