Call for Citizens Assembly on Irish Unity

A Citizens Assembly on a United Ireland would properly facilitate the conversation surrounding Ireland’s future, according to a Young Fine Gael committee led by Kilcullen man John Healy, writes Brian Byrne. It would also allow young people ‘to have their say’ on the matter and “to have a stronger voice and position in the room than in years past."
In a statement, the One Island committee of the FG youth wing says a citizen's assembly would prove invaluable in providing insights into the concessions both communities would be willing to make and accept, adding that it would also give both governments North and South a clearer picture as to what might be on the cards were a referendum on unity to be held.
The committee is co-chaired by Jude O’Kane and Pierce Dargan, with John Healy as YFG executive liaison. Other members are Emily O’Shea, Fintan Lalor, Matthew Talbot, Tiernan FitzLarkin, and Gareth Foynes. They recently published a document on all-island transportation, and now say a Citizens Assembly is the next step that needs to be taken.
John Healy is Leinster Regional Organiser on the Young Fine Gael National Executive.
