Kilcullen 2024: another Wish List

The establishment of a sporting museum in Kilcullen is one of the ideas on Christy Howard's wish-list for Kilcullen in 2024, writes Brian Byrne. Responding to the Diary's invitation for thoughts on the coming year, Christy also would like to see a feasibility study for a by-pass to remove HGV and other heavy traffic from the town.
He is also looking forward to the continuing progress on and eventual opening of the GAA Field of Dreams, and strongly hopes for the GAA club to achieve senior status.
Christy suggests the JFK Hall, formerly the home of Kilcullen Boxing Club, would make a good centre for the sporting museum. His own memories of growing up in the town include joining the Boxing Club when it was located in the loft in The Hideout. The annual carnival in Bolger's Field and going to mass on Sundays with Grandad Aspell in his ass and cart are other fond recollections.
"There are many community groups doing excellent work in Kilcullen and townlands," Christy adds. "Our sports clubs represent a centre of excellence facilitating all sports and culture, run and managed by local volunteers. Kilcullen is a town of hospitality, trade and business, all who generously support activities in many ways. I wish all groups every success and enjoyment in 2024."
